Dame Wendy is passionate about many things, one being counselling! With this in mind, she has generously donated sales proceeds from her autobiography to support MS Auckland’s counselling services. This is a much-needed programme in the MS community.
We were fortunate to have Dame Wendy share her story at our World MS Day function this year. Dame Wendy captivated the audience, speaking about her humble beginnings to trailblazing new international markets. Energy and humour emanated from her as she refers to ‘sell a few books’.
Dame Wendy through her company Sunshine Books, has sold more than 300 million educational books for children, worldwide. Her books have helped children to read in remote parts of Africa, refugee camps in Lebanon, the USA, Europe and more. Dame Wendy has met families who say that her books have taught three generations of the family to read. Her story is one of determination and tenacity.
Throughout the book, whether technology, exporting, early career, suppliers and team – Dame Wendy demonstrates the importance of developing and maintaining real (in person) relationships. Indeed, a people-centric philosophy has been Dame Wendy’s core driver. She explains that if her books can teach one child to read, then it’s all worthwhile.
“I began my journey to teach the world to read, from a small train station in Western Australia. At that time, I had only 34 dollars and one suitcase, but I also had the determination to be successful. This is a story about what is possible. It is a story that I hope will inspire all young people who are planning to make a difference to follow their dreams, not to be afraid of failures along the way, and also to celebrate successes with the people who have made them possible.”
